In May 2025, a group of Middleton students had the meaningful opportunity to volunteer at the Special Olympics National Games. This impactful experience extended beyond the realm of sport, offering valuable lessons in empathy, resilience and inclusion. In this reflection, Ms Ruth, a dedicated secondary educator and long-time Special Olympics volunteer, shares how the event fostered personal growth and deep learning among the students.
As someone who has volunteered with the Special Olympics for about four years, I have come to appreciate both the commonalities and the differences we share with this incredible community. I have witnessed their struggles, their triumphs, and most importantly, their unyielding spirit. Running alongside them not only reconnected me with the running community, but also reignited a sense of purpose, to raise awareness about the special needs community and encourage our younger generation to embrace inclusion through sport.
At the National Games, our students took on important roles: retrieving fly-away balls during football matches, line-judging shuttle landings in badminton, and cheering passionately from the sidelines. They observed first-hand the resilience, courage and collaboration of the athletes, who overcame obstacles with grace and determination. It was a deeply inspiring experience that left a lasting impression on us all.
This experience was more than just a volunteer opportunity, it was a chance for our students to witness what it means to persevere, to collaborate, and to lead with empathy. I hope it encourages them to be more mindful and compassionate toward people from all walks of life, both in school and beyond. The athletes reminded us that strength isn’t just measured by victories, but by the heart with which we face challenges, and I believe our students will carry that lesson with them as they grow.
