At Middleton International School, we believe in nurturing values that extend beyond the classroom—compassion, respect, resilience, and a sense of community. Opportunities like volunteering at the Special Olympics allow our students to live these values in meaningful, real-world settings. In this reflection, our Grade 9 student, Sree Abinav, shares how his experience supporting athletes at the Special Olympics not only deepened his understanding of inclusion, but also inspired personal growth.

My name is Sree Abinav, and I had the opportunity to volunteer for football at the Special Olympics. During this experience, my role was to assist and encourage the athletes throughout their matches, help providing them with fresh footballs and to ensure that everyone felt included and supported. What I enjoyed most was the genuine joy and determination shown by the athletes. Their passion for the sport and their appreciation for our support made every moment truly meaningful.

Throughout the event, I believe I lived out the school values of Compassion and Respect. One moment that stood out was when a player felt discouraged after missing a goal. Our group quickly started to cheer even louder, showing our support and helping to lift their spirits. That energy and encouragement made a clear difference, and later, when he scored, the excitement on his face was unforgettable. That moment reminded me how encouragement and teamwork can truly uplift others.

This experience has changed the way I view challenges and opportunities. I have learnt that with the right mindset and support, anyone can overcome obstacles. Moving forward, I will approach challenges with more patience and empathy, remembering that everyone has their own pace and strengths. Volunteering at the Special Olympics has made me more grateful, grounded and motivated to contribute positively wherever I can.

Sree’s reflection is a powerful reminder of the values we strive to cultivate in all our learners. Through volunteering and community engagement, our students develop empathy, leadership and a deeper appreciation for the strength of the human spirit. We are proud of Sree and all our Middleton students who continue to make a difference—one act of kindness, one cheer, and one moment of support at a time.
