At Middleton International School, we are committed to nurturing well-rounded learners who develop not only academic knowledge but also character, resilience, and a strong sense of community. Our school values guide students to be thoughtful, collaborative and confident, shaping them into individuals ready to take on challenges both inside and outside the classroom.

As part of our student-led newsletter series, the Secondary Years team celebrates the people who bring our school community to life. In this feature, we introduce Mr Tristan, our energetic PE teacher, whose passion for sport and teaching inspires students every day. Through this Meet & Greet, you will get to know his journey, his love for basketball, and how he brings Middleton’s values to life in the PE classroom.

My name is Mr Tristan, and I teach PE at Middleton International School.

Do you have any crazy job experience?

Well, there was one time I was teaching an older class basketball, focusing on lay-ups. One student actually showed me a dunk, and as a teacher, I can’t even touch the hoop! I even played basketball professionally, and up till now, I still can’t dunk.

Did you always want to be a PE teacher? Why?

It’s always been my dream to be a teacher since I was young. You can see learners develop skills in the classroom, but in PE, you see them develop even more, both physically and personally.

How does Middleton PE incorporate contentment values in classes?

In PE, we focus on collaboration and resilience, and we also get to know friends from different nationalities better.

What’s your favourite made-up game for PE?

I like a game we played for Sports Day called Flip the Hoop. Students throw a bean bag into a hoop, then keep throwing to see who can get the furthest.

What is your favourite sport?

I’d have to choose basketball because it’s the sport I’m in professionally, and I love it. Basketball also brings a lot of opportunities.

What’s your go-to song for a lesson?

Golden by K-pop Demon Hunters.

What’s your favourite sports experience?

Probably when I was playing for the Singapore National Team. We went to the Philippines to play, and we didn’t win. It didn’t end well, but it was still a really good experience.
