At Middleton, we believe that values such as resilience, collaboration and compassion come alive when our students step into the world and engage with others meaningfully. Through the Special Olympics Outreach Session held at National University of Singapore (NUS), our students had a chance to witness the power of sport and inclusion while they reflect deeply on their own growth. In this reflection, Grade 9 student, Sana Sree, shares how being part of this event shaped her outlook in powerful ways.
I had an incredible opportunity to take part in the Special Olympics Outreach Session at NUS as a line judge. Being able to see the players up close was truly uplifting, the determination and focus on the athletes’ faces were unforgettable. I felt proud to be involved and to support such a meaningful event that exists to extend opportunities to every individual.
During the session, I found myself living out many of Middleton’s core values. I showed Responsibility in my role, carefully judging whether the shuttle was in or out during each match. I witnessed and learned Resilience from the athletes as they pushed through each game with unwavering strength and consistency. Their Collaboration was especially inspiring, particularly in doubles matches, where their communication and support for each other played a key role in every rally. Most of all, I saw how Respect was given and received by everyone on and off the court. This event wasn’t just about sport; it was about shaping stronger, more confident individuals who felt seen, valued and celebrated.
This experience reminded me that challenges can be overcomed with the right mindset. Watching the athletes give their best, regardless of the hurdles they faced, has inspired me to approach future opportunities with greater courage, compassion and determination.
We are proud of our learners for stepping into opportunities like the Special Olympics with open hearts and thoughtful minds. Through these experiences, they not only contribute to meaningful causes, but also grow in confidence and character. Reflections like these remind us that service, empathy and action are some of the most powerful lessons a school can offer.
